Jefferson Street
Historic Black business and music corridor in North Nashville, severed by I-40 construction in the late 1960s.
History
The heart of Nashville’s Black business and music corridor in the mid-20th century, home to clubs like the New Era, the Del Morocco, and the Club Baron. Construction of Interstate 40 through the corridor in the late 1960s displaced families, severed the neighborhood, and is widely regarded as an act of urban renewal that disproportionately harmed Black Nashville.
